The weather-Thunderstoms

-It 's too cold...
- Oh horrible rain!
(...)
 - Lovely day isn't it?
- Yeah, beauuutiful, too hot and dry though, I wish we would get some rain .

After coming to live in a country where the weather is the only conversation you can be sure of having with someone on a daily basis, I am persuaded that the past days gave margin to a new level of discussions...

See, for a society that is used to live as if there is no God, it is interesting to see the reactions of people when God's creation goes beyond our human control. For Christians on the other hand it is another opportunity to acknowledge His power, and I do hope that all my Christians friends are having this amazing opportunity!

I was reading a quotation that reminded me of different weather conditions:

I often used to sit and view the moon for a long time; and in the day spent much time in viewing the clouds and sky, to behold the sweet glory of God in these things: in the mean time, singing forth, with a low voice, my contemplations of the Creator and Redeemer. And scarce any thing, among all the works of nature, was so sweet to me as thunder and lightning; formerly nothing had been so terrible to me. Before, I used to be uncommonly terrified with thunder, and to be struck with terror when I saw a thunder-storm rising; but now, on the contrary, it rejoiced me. I felt God, if I may so speak, at the first appearance of a thunderstorm; and used to take the opportunity, at such times, to fix myself in order to view the clouds, and see the lightnings play, and hear the majestic and awful voice of God's thunder, which oftentimes was exceedingly entertaining, leading me to sweet contemplations of my great and glorious God. While thus engaged, it always seemed natural for me to sing, or chant forth my meditations; or to speak my thoughts in soliloquies with a singing voice. Johnathan Edwards
I guess most people here have never been through a real thunderstorm. Those thirty minutes which, when we were  children, seemed to be a whole afternoon, and we thought we would barely be alive after something like that. Well, maybe you might think I am exaggerating. It is however astonishing how you can perceive God's grandeur and glory in a rather disturbing way.
While I m writing this I am also reminded of Sinai [Exodus 19:16 ], and how God's power astonished and put fear in the hearts of that generation. But despite seeing all the Power and Majesty of the Great God, almost all of that generation perished in the wilderness for idolatry, and disobedience.
(...)
For sure our generation is having enough signs of God's power and eminent judgement, it may be in relation to natural causes or even current economic circumstances. Will they acknowledge the most powerful and Almighty God?

Back to thunderstorms, I forgot to tell you the unforgettable memories I have:

  • As much as I was (and still am) afraid of  thunderstorms, I believe they reveal to mankind, the infinite glory of God, above all that we can understand or imagine.
  • Thunderstorms also always convicted me that although at that moment God seemed to be much displeased and ready to destroy this world, He would not do so [Gen 9: 14-16].
  • Thunderstorms for some reason, as I grew older still caused me to wonder and awe; but as I grew in  knowledge of God  , they have stirred up my admiration and love for this Great God, who, despite of His glorious Holiness, Power and Mighty, in His begotten Son has so loved us.
Let us not forget how much we are in God's hands, concerning every aspect of our lives.Let us also be reminded of the brevity of our days. May we acknowledge His power and fear Him, for the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom  [Prov 9:10].
Let us not forget that He has the power not only to kill the body but also to destroy both soul and body in hell [Mat 10:28].

In Christ

PS: there are no thunderstorms in Ireland.

Indeed, creation always shows the power of our Almighty God!

O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works Thy hands have made.
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:

And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin:
(Repeat Refrain.)

When Christ shall come with shouts of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!
