Beneath your cross I lay me down,
and mourn to see your thorny crown;
love drops in blood from every vein,
love is the spring of all your pain.
Here Jesus shall I ever stay,
and spend my longing hours away,
think of Your bleeding wounds and pain,
and contemplate Your woes again.
The rage of satan and of sin,
of foes without and fears within,
shall ne'er my conquering souls remove,
or from Your cross, or from Your love.
Secured from harm beneath Your shade,
here death and hell shall ne'er invade;
nor Sinai, with its thundering noise,
shall e'er disturb my happier joys.
O ummolested, happy rest,
where inward fears are all suppressed!
Here I shall love and live secure,
and patiently my cross endure.
William Williams, 1717-91
